Dickinson Dees plays crucial role in work experience deal - 13 Jan 2010
Dickinson Dees provided legal advice for the York-based North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP) to acquire education specialist Edexcel’s Trident service in York.
Trident helps young people improve their employability skills and develop as individuals, as well as making the work placement process as easy as possible for employers, pupils, schools and colleges.
Through a wide range of work related learning activities, NYBEP helps schools and colleges enrich the curriculum, businesses actively engage in the development of their future workforce, and learners better understand their personal skills and future choices.
Matthew Smith, an associate with the corporate team in the York office of Dickinson Dees, said: “This is a perfect complementary fit. NYBEP were already providing this work experience service for schools and colleges in North Yorkshire, so it made sense to take over Edexcel’s Trident provision for York.
“We provided legal advice on both the corporate and the employment aspects of the deal, with Lisa Robertson from our Employment team helping on the important issue of employer liability. This was a good example of how utilising expertise from across the firm can help to achieve a positive result,” said Mr Smith.
Sue Gradwell of NYPEB commented: “The role of NYBEP is to help schools and businesses across York and North Yorkshire work together in a range of ways including work experience for pupils. We already support approximately 8,000 work experience placements in North Yorkshire and work with schools and employers in York in other ways so it makes great sense that the York work experience service is now part of NYBEP.
She explained: “Work experience in York has been coordinated by Trident for many years and we look forward to maintaining their high standards. We have great respect for the Trident legacy and are even considering the instigation of a Trident award to acknowledge particular achievement through work experience. However, we are also delighted to be able to enhance the NYBEP service to schools in this way.
“We are very grateful to Dickinson Dees for the great support they provided to us in ensuring the transfer of the Trident business was handled effectively,” she added.
Edexcel is part of the giant Pearson Group of companies.
