Expertise

    John trained with the firm, and since qualification in 1991 has specialised exclusively in commercial dispute resolution, through both the Courts, arbitration, mediation and other forms of ADR.

    He became a partner in 2000, and now heads up the 20-strong Commercial Disputes Group, which is able to offer specialist advice to clients out of all of the firm's offices.

    John's main areas of expertise are in relation to contractual disputes in the manufacturing, chemicals and public sector particularly, concerning advice on the construction of contracts and also termination of contracts. John is also regularly involved in shareholder and partnership disputes as well as sports law disputes. Outside of this jurisdiction, he has handled cases in France, Switzerland and Norway, as well as Scotland and Southern Ireland.

    John's varied caseload sees him regularly involved before the High and County Court and Court of Appeal, as well as various sporting tribunals and also in numerous mediations.

    Recent examples of his work include:-


    Contractual Disputes

    Advising a chemical company client in relation to a multi-million pound contractual dispute with one of its customers over construction of contracts and allegations of anti-competitive behaviour.

    Advising a power station operator in relation to disputes arising following the expiry of its contracts.

    Advising a local authority client in relation to a dispute with a major supplier of IT services, and negotiating a resolution.

    Advising a manufacturing client on its claims against a customer who failed to take delivery of goods ordered by it, and negotiating a resolution.

    Advising another local authority client in relation to its rights of termination under a long-term agreement with a contractor in the case of suspected wrongdoing by the contractor, and bringing consequent recovery proceedings.

    Acting for one party in a drawn-out completion account dispute following acquisition by it of a subsidiary company of a major PLC.


    Shareholder Disputes

    Advising minority shareholders on their rights, and negotiating settlements on their behalf with companies with which they were previously involved.

    Acting for companies faced with claims for unfairly prejudicial conduct brought by their former shareholders, and achieving settlements by negotiation and mediation.

    Partnership Disputes

    Handling negotiations for resolution of disputes between former partners in Legal, Accounting, Financial Services and Surveying Practices, representing both former partners and also the remaining partners and achieving resolution through negotiation, arbitration, mediation or through the Courts.

    Advising partners in other disciplines, including medical and dental practises, as well as manufacturing businesses.

    Sports Law

    Advising Football Club client in relation to a dispute with a member of its former management team.

    Handling disputes before UEFA's own Appeals Panel, as well as several cases before the Court of Arbitration of Sport in Lausanne on behalf of Football Club client.

    Advising clients on the operation of FIFA Regulations in relationg to the transfer of players.

    Advising football players on disputes with their agents.

    Advising generally on contractual disputes between sports clubs and staff, sponsors and suppliers.

Additional Information

John lives in Felton, near Alnwick, with his wife Alison, (who is also a Partner in Dickinson Dees LLP), and they have two children. His hobbies are travelling, supporting Newcastle United FC, reading and spending time with the family when he gets the chance!

Internally within the firm, John is also the Risk and Compliance Partner. As such, he is involved in formulating and implementing quality and risk management strategies and initiatives for our business.
