- Nick is a partner and Head of Contentious Construction in the firm’s Construction and Engineering Group. He specialises in Contentious Construction law, advising on all forms of construction and engineering disputes, including professional negligence claims. Nick is an accredited Mediator with the ADR Group. He is also an accredited Adjudicator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and TeCSA, and one of the few Solicitor Adjudicators on the CIOB panel.
Experience
Recent disputes have included:-
• Advising a developer in a professional negligence claim against a project manager and quantity surveyor relating to a prestigious residential development in Newcastle.
• Advising a major engineering firm in relation to a multi-million dollar claim against an international company based in Japan arising out of a letter of guarantee.
• Advising an engineering firm in a professional negligence claim in excess of £1 million against a designer.
• Advising a major developer in a final account dispute with a contractor arising out of the construction of a retail park.
• Advising major contractor in a potential action against an NHS Trust on the scope of its obligations under a PFI scheme for the construction of a new hospital and overseeing settlement of the claim.
• Advising contractor in a claim against a local authority for breach of contract and damages for loss of profit.
• Acting for contractor in Final Account Dispute of claim for loss and expense in Arbitration, including all advocacy at the Arbitration hearing itself.
• Successfully advising a housing Association in connection with a claim against its architects for professional negligence.
• Advising an NHS Trust in successful defence of multi-party adjudication.
• Successful enforcement of an adjudicator’s decision in the Newcastle upon Tyne District Registry.
• Successfully recovering an adjudicator’s fees against the Joint Administrative Receivers of a company personally.
• Advising Adjudicator on several occasions on legal issues including contractual interpretation.

Additional Information
Graduated from Nottingham University with an LLB Hons Degree in Law in 1989 followed by law finals at the College of Law in York. Began training at Dickinson Dees in January 1991 becoming a partner in April 2000.
Nick regularly contributes articles to local and national publications, including Construction Law. Nick has also lectured on a wide variety of construction topics, and provided commentary on adjudication and recent developments in Construction law.
